THE TZANEEN AREA:
Tzaneen is
situated amongst the foothills
of the northern Drakensberg, here known as the Wolkberg ('Cloudy Mountain').
The photo above, taken in the Modjadji Cycad Reserve, gives a good
idea of what our area looks like. The Reserve, hosts the highest
concentration
of a single Cycad species in the world, the MODJADJI cycad (
Encephalartos transvenosus), and literally thousands of them occur
in an area of 305 hectares. The name 'Modjadji' comes from the legendary
rain queen of the area, whose descendants are still the custodians of
the reserve.
We enjoy a subtropical climate, and fruit like bananas, paw-paws,
avos, mangos, litchis and citrus are cultivated. It is an important
forestry area, and tea is also produced.
