Welcome to The ERIS Experience, a site dedicated to Eris, the goddess of chaos/discord, and sultry villain of Dreamworks' latest animated adventure, Sinbad, Legend of the Seven Seas.   Here you can learn more about the film, with emphasis on the character of Eris, voiced by Michelle Pfeiffer.

As with most films, the villain motivates the film's action.  In Sinbad, it's the mischievous Eris who gives dashing thief/sailor Sinbad (Brad Pitt), Marina (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Sinbad's crew such a hard time as they attempt to recover the stolen Book of Peace, and save the life of Sinbad's childhood friend, Proteus.

Eris, lifted from Greek mythology, is more playful than downright evil in Sinbad, Legend of the Seven Seas.  She stirs up trouble to make life interesting for herself.  Explains Michelle Pfeiffer, 'Eris is very amused by [Sinbad] and she toys with him, sort of like a cat and a mouse. She finds him very intriguing and a challenge--she doesn't really want to kill him, just torture him a little bit!"

Personifying Chaos in animated form: take Michelle Pfeiffer as the alluring but dangerous Catwoman in Batman Returns, mix her with The Little Mermaid's evil octopus-legged Ursula, add a dab of Underworld-dwelling Hades from Disney's Hercules, and viola, Eris!

This is not to say that Eris isn't tempermental or dangerous.  Or for that matter, quite sexy.  The vast majority of reviewers have had only praise for Eris, in terms of both Michelle Pfeiffer's sultry voice work and the character's jaw-dropping 'morphing' animation, as supervised by Dan Wagner.  Take the example of this comment from Aint It Cool News's Harry Knowles:

As a voice, Michelle Pfeiffer oozes sensuality as Eris. As a work of animation, Eris is a marvel… a trickster, here, there… everywhere. Within a single line of dialogue she could be 50 ft away, blink, stroking your cheek, blink, in front of you, blink, 10 ft behind you. The result is beautiful work.

Whether Sinbad, Legend of the Seven Seas is destined to become an animation classic is irrelevant.  Eris is the latest in a line of animated bad girls and all-out villainesses that goes all the way back to the wicked queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
