1. Ghamuip Outpost (Aug 2000)

Location:

Located 81km East of Upington and 34km North of the N14.  GPS: S 28°11'03.8"  E 21°52'14.4".  N14 turnoff from Olifantshoek: GPS: S28°15'38" E22°04'58".

Facilities:

This secluded self catering private hideaway accommodates 16 persons in 4 bedrooms.  Firewood are included and are plentiful for late night campfires.  A fully equipped kitchen with fridge and gas stove, bush pub, open air bathroom and bird hide rounds off the facilities.

4x4 notes:

Five different well marked 4x4 routes of grades from easy to challenging and totals to about 50km. The terrain varies between grass plains, dunes and rocks.  Tyre pressure below 2bar.  Grass net for radiator advisable.  The most difficult part is a steep sand dune towards the end of the Black route, but can be circumvented.  Cell-phone reception only from top of the hill behind the outpost. (Ps. This is a lovely spot to view the sunset.  See the picture below.)

What to do and see:

If you give the last dune on the Black route a miss, all the routes can be covered in one day, but scenic spots along the route such as various San workshops, San artifacts, Stone-age artifacts, fountain, bush camps, game, giant bird nests and hiking routes makes this place a definite 2-3 day stop over.

When to visit:

This an ideal stopover to or from the Gemsbok park. Summer days are hot and winter nights are cold.  In between seasons are the best I guess.

General Comment:

I you want to get away from it all and feel the Khalahari sand between your toes, this is the place to go.  My rating a good 4.
