2. Lilly Dale Lodge Kimberley (March 2003)  Fly Fishing Home ]

Location:  S29 02 18.3 E24 30 10.2 (1107m above sea level). Travel south from Kimberley towards Hopetown, about 35km, past Richie, turn right after crossing the Riet/ModderRivier bridge.  Then follow the road signs to Lilydale for about 16 km on the gravel road.  About 550 km from Pretoria.

Facilities:  a Mix of excellent catering and self catering chalets, pub and restaurant. All with great views of the river and sunrise.

Fly Fishing Notes: During my two day stay the water was a bit dirty and made sight fishing difficult, fishing conditions was poor, but managed to land a small mouth yellow (about 25cm) late one afternoon.  All CAR here.  A wading stick is a must, The rocks all are very round and slippery.  Crossing the river and finding the spots were difficult with the dirty water.  It will pay you to get one of the guides just to point out the crossings and likely spots for starters. Some down river spots require travel by high clearance or 4x4 vehicle, but plenty good stuff within site of your cabin.  A drift down the river with inflatable canoes is a must and to be booked at the reception.  OK for kids too.

What to do and see:  Game viewing, hunting, canoeing, walking, bird watching, though some spots only reachable by 4x4.

When to visit: Outside rainy season.

General Comment:  Bit far for a weekend, but definitely worth a two day stop on your way to Cape Town. Near enough to Kimberley to keep the non converted busy.  My Rating: 4
